Our Program Information
Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Miami Valley Region, Inc. History
In 1978, a small group of parents, Children's Medical Center staff and volunteers identified the need for a guest-house to serve families of critically ill children in the Dayton area. Local McDonald's owner/operators were contacted to assist in establishing the 14th Ronald McDonald House in the country. They pledged over half of the funds needed for the purchase and renovation of the first building at 741 Valley Street. The remaining funds were raised by the newly incorporated Board of Trustees.
On February 1, 1980 the Dayton Ronald McDonald House opened. It consisted of seven guestrooms, 4 ½ baths, a kitchen/dining area, shared offices, a playroom, parlor, patio, and an apartment for the live-in staff. In the early days of the organization, a live-in resident, who was responsible for the facility, staffed the House 24 hours a day.
In 1992, the leadership of the Dayton Ronald McDonald House began to look at the possibility of building a new facility. In September of 1996, following extensive research, the Board of Trustees kicked-off a $3,200,000 capital campaign. On November 5, 1998 the Ronald McDonald House of Dayton moved into our current facility at 555 Valley Street. This Ronald McDonald House has 20,000 square feet of living space. There are 14 overnight bedrooms, each with a private bath. In addition, there are four kitchens, a large dining room, a playroom, two family rooms, a library, elevator and other amenities. This facility allows Ronald McDonald House Charities to better serve families in need of a home-away-from-home.
Also in 1998, the Dayton Ronald McDonald House merged with Ronald McDonald Children's Charities of the Miami Valley, Inc. creating Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Miami Valley Region, Inc.
